According to the video, Nō appeared in Japan in approximately 650 AD and originated from Chinese styles of drama. Since then, Nō has persisted alongside other traditional forms of theater, like Kabuki (歌舞伎), and its cultural significance to Japan has earned it legal protection under UNESCO. Specific storytelling guidelines and character archetypes and the frequent use of masks to communicate information about characters are some of the most distinguishing features of Nō. Besides the long history of the art and its complex characteristics, I enjoyed watching the footage of Nō performances found at the end of the video. The calculated movements and reserved speech that performers used differed from the expressiveness characteristic of much of Western drama; but I nevertheless admired the intentionality that Nō actors demonstrated in their performance.
